Capital Slam Finals: teaser video - on the road to the Ottawa Slam Championship...

Capital Slam Finals are coming soon: the Ottawa slam champion will be known on June 10th!

I have already published some pictures of the 8 finalists in a previous post, pictures shot during the semi-finals. I have published videos of the semi-finals performances by Rusty Priske and Sean O'Gorman. The idea of mixing the two approaches was rather obvious: assembling video clips from the 8 finalists in order to offer some teaser for the finals...

I had videos for 3 of the Capital Slam finalists. But thanks to Rusty, I was able to get into contact with Greg Boyd and Ragaeed who had shot other semi-finals performances. Perfect complement to get a taste of the competition to come. Thanks to them to make their videos available!

Don't miss the finals. In addition to the tough competition surrounding the Ottawa slam championship, the night will provide the 5 new members of the Capital Slam team...

Capital Slam semi-finals, more than only 8 poets

I's been a week now since Capital Slam semi-finals and I've already shown pictures of the 8 future finalists as well of the organizers. But other poets performed that night, starting with the 4 other semi-finalists: Vanessa Baker, Brad Morden, Grace Defined and Danielle K.L. Gregoire. And other poets shared their texts too, before the competition or after it: Sarah Mussa, Kimbit, OpenSecret and Chris Tse.

I don't have pictures for all of them, some of my pictures are not really good... But they are OK for sharing and remembering some moments of the night...

Sean O'Gorman in video at Capital Slam Semi-finals

"Unpaid Wages" by Sean O'Gorman
Capital Slam semi-finals - May, 7th, 2011 - Alumni Auditorium, University of Ottawa

I keep exploring the pictures and videos that I took during Capital Slam semi-finals last week. Obviously, some are not good enough to be shared, but some are surprisingly decent - as an pure amator photographer, I take the blame for the bad acquisitions, and I acknowledge the quality of my camera for the good ones...

But I am really happy with some videos, for instance the first minute of the first poem by Sean O'Gorman, entitled "Unpaid Wages". Sean is one of the people in charge of Urban Legends, the slam series taking part at Carleton University; a great poet, with interesting texts, nice rhythms, with a soft but deep way of performing.
Sean finished 7th of the semi-finals and will take part in the finals on June, 10th.

Capital Slam semi-finals, don't forget the organizers

3 - 2 - 1 - Raise It!

That's the tradition at Capital Slam: fist up, countdown, 3-2-1, and the audience shouts "Raise It", giving support to the poet who is just about to perform.

That's part of the atmosphere a Slam night, part of the interaction between the audience and the poetry on stage. That's the power of live performance, the little specificity of live poetry, of spoken word, compared to the book of poetry you can sip slowly sitting on the grass. That's the power of slam and all the little details that keep the night alive in addition to the poetic juice that is delivered.

So just a couple of pictures as an overview of some details from the Semi-finals of Capital Slam.
Because a slam night, it's also the host for the night, Nathanaël Larochette in this case, introducing poets and gathering the scores from the audience. That's an official, doing the maths from the gathered scores, keeping an eye on the time since each poet is only allowed 3 minutes; Ruthanne Edward is perfect for the job, long-time slam organizer with Rusty Priske. That's also a DJ who provides musical atmosphere, a string of beats and tunes to keep the party going in all situations, and DJ Cosmo offered some nice musical moments last week.

Capital Slam, it's a team - a group of poets but also a team of organizers...

Captial Slam Semi-finals: photo set of the 8 finalists

As alrady presented in a previous post, Capital Slam semi-finals took place last Saturday (May, 7th). A great competition with 12 intense contenders - leading to 8 finalists. Here is a small photo set for the 8 chosen ones in order to start preparing the June 10th finals (with the semi-final scores).

1. LOH EL (57.4) 2. SENSE-SAY (57.3)
3. BRUCE NARBAITZ (56.6) 4. MACK CANNON (56.0)

5. PRUFROCK (56.0) 6. ELLE-P (55.8)

7. SEAN O'GORMAN (55.7) 8. RUSTY PRISKE (55.4)

I also have pictures for the 4 semi-finalist-but-non-finalists. I will include them in another blog post. But I don't want the 'other four' to think I despise non-winners: the competition was close last Saturday, so congratulations to Vanessa Baker, Danielle K.L. Gregoire, Grace Defined and Bruce Morden. Pictures will come soon for you too!
I will also include some video clips of the poetry performances from the semi-finales. But this will need more editing and I'm not that used to video editing yet...

Here are larger pictures of the 8 finalists... Ranks matter since the scores from the semi-finals are kept and will be be added up to scores from the finals - hence semi-finals are crucial for the title, or even being in the top 5 to make it to the Capital Slam team...

Rusty Priske at the Capital Slam semi-finales in Ottawa

'Darwin's Theory of Revolution'
performed by Rusty Priske at Ottawa Capital Slam semi-finales, on May, 7th, 2011

Slam, for performed spoken word, poetry pushed alive on stage, sharing its intensity & depth in front of an audience, the power of its living words.

Slam, for poetry gathered in small competition. Open to anybody, any voice, any message - but in a competition. With rules, 3-minute time granted to offer style & meaning & much more; juges given marks; marks leading to winner for each night, leading to a year-long ranking, leading to a champion.
And since we are in North-America, championships are divided into regular seasons and play-offs, or sort of play-offs.

The semi-finales of Capital Slam took place last Saturday night at the Alumni Auditorium of the University of Ottawa. The 12 best poets of the year, performing 2 poems in front of a crowd of 200 people including 5 judges. Yeah, this is art, this is sport, this is art & poetry sport, man - and sport with goals, not sport for pure beauty of art (not only). The 8 best seni-finalists are qualified for the final, the 5 best finalists are selected in the Capital Slam team for the Canadian championship...

Do I need to remind you that the Capital Slam Team is the 2-time defending Canadian Champion? That Open Secret from Capital Slam just won the Canadian individual tittle? That Ian Keteku from Capital Slam won the World Title?...
This is sport, this is city-size competition, and much more: this is a competition showing maybe some of the best slamers on the great circus of performing poetry...

The night was intense, sure, no suprise. It was impressive to see faces and hear voices previously heard in much smaller conditions. The stage of the Mercury Lounge feels small & friendly compared to the Alumni Auditorium, and the crowd definitely pushes performers, adds intensity to words already born intense and vivid. Great energy exchange: this might be one of the basic definition of poetry for me, and I certainly received my share of energy & intensity yesterday.

Apart from the words themselves, that's really this intensity that struck me, and quickly made me eager to build portraits of the poets. Intense poem associated to intense poeple brings intense characters, wonderful pictures and flows on stage. It would be fascinating to draw such performers - but I stopped being good at drawing at the age of 11. I could try to write some portraits - could be an interesting exercice.
But I started with a more basic approach to portraits, a more instantaneous. I played with my new camera friend. Took some pictures, shot some videos, from my row in the middle of the audience.

Obviously, the quality is often poors (could you please stand still for a while, poets) But there might be some interesting pictures to share once I get rid of the bad ones... Which might take a couple of days...

But we can start with this video clip from Rusty Priske performace. This is its second poem of the night, entitled 'The Darwins Theory of Revolution'. Intense, I suppose you've understood my focus now - but also beautifully crafted and playing with sounds.

More videos and pictures to come next week!

You can check the names of the 8 finalists here. The final will take place on Firday June, 10th at the Alumni Auditorium of the University of Ottawa.
